Students in Mr. Ding’s Chinese I class made a field trip to New York City, including a visit of Chinatown in Flushing, Queens and a conference with the Permanent Mission of the Peoples Republic of China to the United Nations, on March 24, 2010.

In the first leg the NHS students went to a Chinese buffet in Flushing, where the students practiced speaking Chinese with the waitresses as well as the customers. Then they went to a nearby Chinese bookstore where the students saw Chinese publications and Chinese cultural pieces, such as paintings, handcrafts, etc. Due to the shortened schedule, they didn’t make the trip to a Chinese supermarket intended for them to recognize the item names in Chinese.

The students then went to PR China’s Permanent Mission to UN. In the conference with the Chief Press Office, Mr. Liu Yutong, the students learned about China and UN, China and U.S., China’s policies, and raised a great variety of questions, covering topics such as global awareness, climate changes, environmental protection, U.S./China education, health care, etc. Some students even raised questions in Chinese, and got the response first in Chinese and then English.

Though a long day, the students were very enthusiastic and maintained great spirit during the whole trip, and many students expressed the hope of making such trips in the future.

The conference in P.R China Mission to UN is now online in their website at: http://www.china-un.org/chn/czthd/t675212.htm

The giving of gifts is an important tradition central to Chinese culture. Students enrolled in Diane Dutchick’s Painting 1 course recently created several pieces to be presented as gifts to members of the visiting Chinese delegation. This was a challenging undertaking with only four weeks of training in class.

Paige Olson, Morgan Kirol, Lillian Rodriquez, Emily Kopcik, Jamie Whelan, Lucy Reilly, and Dominique Allen all donated their work on behalf of NHS.

Thank you, to all artists!

Newtown High School students, faculty, administration, and staff joined our Chinese guests and their host families in a final celebration prior to their departure for home.  Many thanks to the tremendous amount of time and effort contributed by all of those involved.  There is no way that this initiative could be as successful as it is without the generous and unselfish assistance that we have received.  Thank you.  Read the rest of this entry to see photographs from the farewell dinner. We have received word from our sister school in Liaocheng that, pending the approval of the Ministry of Education, we will welcome a delegation of 15 representatives on January 30 (at the end of Chinese Lunar New Year). Their visit of NHS will conclude on February 9.
The 15 representatives will be:
  • Principal Zhang
  • 3-4 Teachers (probably English or Science)
  • 10 students (Senior 2 all advanced level students) : 6 Boys and 4 Girls
This visit will require us to open our school to our guests as hosts and as professional educators. We will be working with the PTSA and the superintendent’s office to seek host homes for our guests. This will be a very exciting time for our guests. Our school will be on display as they will develop a report about our teachers, students and community to be presented to the commissioners of the Ministry of Education upon their return. Planned activities will be developed and we will look for opportunities to offer them an experience they will never forget. In turn for next year, we will begin to plan our first abroad trip for our school and these logistical issues will continue in conversation with Principal Zhang upon his arrival.
