A letter from Mr. Hiruo, NHS CAPT Coordinator
As March approaches, the Newtown High School faculty and administration are preparing our students for the upcoming CAPT experience. The Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT) is an extremely important assessment that is committed to helping our high school educators strengthen student learning, assess what our students know and what they are able to utilize through their performance on the CAPT. All tenth grade students in Connecticut are required to take this assessment. In addition, 11th grade students who did not meet goal on any CAPT subtest will be taking this assessment as well. This test experience is mandatory for those students indicated. 11th Grade students will receive a personalized notification indicating what re-take assessments they are responsible for. Beginning this year, CAPT scores will be indicated on the front page of all student transcripts.
Sophomores will be tested in Math, Science, Reading Across the Disciplines (including Reading for Information and Response to Literature subtests), and Writing Across the Disciplines (including Interdisciplinary Writing I, II and Editing & Revising subtests). Meeting GOAL on specific subtests of the CAPT (math or science/ reading and writing) is one way for students to meet their graduation requirements in Problem-Solving and Written Communication. Sophomore CAPT score performance will be reported on next year’s transcripts.
Newtown High School will be making adaptive schedule changes for the first two weeks of March to comply with state legislation as well as to aid students during test-taking. For the first two weeks of March (March 1 – March 12), testing begins at 7:30 AM. Each day the students will experience one CAPT assessment followed by a shortened class schedule and lunch.
During the first week of March, we will also administer a PRE-CAPT assessment to all freshmen. Freshmen will follow the same test and class schedule. They will conclude their testing on Monday, March 8. Beginning March 9, Ninth graders will meet with counselors to start the process of scheduling classes for the next school year.
Regular busing will be maintained during these two weeks of testing. Juniors and seniors who are not involved in testing will follow the arranged class schedule when testing concludes.
We are committed to helping all students achieve success on the 2010 CAPT. Please encourage your student(s) to eat a healthy breakfast and get plenty of rest so that they are well-prepared and well-rested for CAPT. The NHS PTSA will also be providing breakfast items to test-takers each morning in the lobby.
