ancntrmDuring the month of November, Mr. Saladin’s Western Studies classes researched the Roman Empire. In “The Fall of Rome Activity” students had to identify key causes that led to the fall of Rome. Students then had to brainstorm ideas that would have prevented Rome’s demise. The culminating activity were group presentations in front of the class. Following the presentations, the students in each respective class voted for the best overall group. Normally this would have been the end of the project.

However, the winning group from each class had another interesting and perhaps difficult next step: Challenge Mr. Clayton, Assistant Principal and former history teacher, to a debate on the fall of Rome.

During one full class period each group had to respond to questions posed to them by Mr. Clayton. Mr. Clayton challenged students on their ideas and posed questions to each group on other potential causes that led to Rome’s demise. Students in each group were permitted to use notes and whatever information they could gather to support their position. Mr. Clayton was given copies of each groups final essay.

The students who participated were:

  • Class 7 Melanie Curtis, Anna Dilworth, Abby Fagerholm, Meaghan Kelly
  • Class 6 Troy Larsen, Alex Stryzelecki, Kurt Daum
  • Class 8 Danny Bittman, Eric Branecky, Mike Newman
  • Class 4 David Swigart, Catie Yakush, Vikram Makayee

All students did an outstanding job presenting their ideas. Mr. Clayton looks forward to the next challenge. Great Job.
