Newtown High School Blog

This past weekend, 13 members of the Newtown High School Debate Team competed at the Columbia University National Debate Tournament in New York City. Competitors from 26 different states competed in various speech and debate events. Newtown High School finished in 3rd place in Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate (VLD). This was Newtown’s best finish at a national tournament since we garnered a 3rd place finish at the 2007 Princeton Invitational. Newtown’s performance at Columbia can be attributed to Paul Garafalo‘s 3rd place finish (out of a field of 200 teams) in the VLD division . Mr. Garafolo’s performance at this prestigious tournament has also earned him a bid to the National Tournament of Champions at the University of Kentucky in May.

Senior Akshay Agashe won the top speaker award in Varsity Lincoln Douglas divisions and both Mark Fernandes and Akshay finished in the top 20 as well. In the Open Public Forum Debate division, Seniors Jessica Thomas and Biota Hung finished 17th out of a field of 100 teams.
