The DECA club recently held a Meet & Greet (& Eat) event in the Newtown High School cafeteria to introduce potential new members to the group. DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America, Delta Epsilon Chi at the college level), is an extra-curricular activity that allows members to experience a variety of business challenges. Marketing skills were very apparent in the decision to attract potential members with a variety of tasty foods offered during the time between the ending of school and the beginning of sports practices. All attendees agreed the event was worthwhile – and fun! DECA meets every Wednesday from 2:00-2:45. The club is supervised by Business Ed. Teacher, Jolene Thompson. Tags: DECA

Student Sponsored Activity Transportation SurveyPosted by admin in Clubs, Community Service
Read the flyer here: NHS_Transportation_Survey Students – take the survey here Parents – take the survey here Junior Melissa Destefano, president of Global Voice, has been an active community member in her effort to help those in need in Haiti. Melissa has organized a variety of events and fundraisers throughout Newtown and the high school towards the cause. On March 6, 2010 Melissa organized a successful benefit show at the Newtown Teen Center to raise money to donate to the non-profit agency, “HaitiMaryCare.” The show, which featured the band Homelife, raised two hundred dollars. Not only did Melissa organize an entire concert, but also gathered physical supplies. Melissa hung up fliers throughout the school asking for basic necessities such as food and toiletries, and put collection boxes in the school; which she later gathered and prepared to send to Haiti. Melissa also visited her dentist, Dental Associates on Church Hill, and was readily offered dental supplies to ship to Haiti. The supplies and money will be shipped to Haiti through HaitiMaryCare on April 15, 2010. Congratulations to Melissa for creating an awareness in Newtown and making a difference for those around the world. The Future Teachers of America Club hosted a special guest speaker at their last meeting. Dr. Sherry Earle, Special Education Department Chair at the high school, spoke with FTA members about students with special needs (delayed and gifted), and how they experience the learning environment. Dr. Earle guided the FTA members through several exercises designed to approximate physical, mental, visual and emotional challenges faced by those with special needs. The students were particularly frustrated when asked to write with their non-dominant hand and to perform tasks with restricted vision. The discussion then focused on modifications that teachers can make to their lessons in order to accommodate the challenged students. FTA members agreed on the value of Dr. Earle’s presentation, and will implement her suggestions as they volunteer in classrooms across the district. Future Teachers of America is advised by Ms.Kristin Violette. On Friday, March 12, 2010, sixteen members of Newtown High School’s Gay-Straight Alliance and four teachers (Kristin English, Jim Rovello, Amanda Friedman, and Jeff Tolson) attended the annual True Colors Conference at the University of Connecticut, Storrs Campus. The conference provides high school and college students, as well as teachers, with several options for workshops relating to LBGTQI issues, including ones on body image, stereotypes in the media, tolerance, and the sexuality spectrum. The day was a great success! The students and teachers alike came away with a lot of great information on how to increase awareness of LBGTQI issues in the high school. The day also reminded the kids how lucky they were to attend NHS. One student, who went to the conference for the first time, was saddened by the number of students who did not have a working GSA in their high school. She mentioned how lucky we were to have a safe and tolerant school environment and was disappointed for those who were not as fortunate as NHS students. We look forward to sharing what we learned at the conference with the students and teachers, and we invite anyone interested in the conference to think about joining us next year! Due to the hard work of junior Audra Sarna, there is now a Guitar Club at Newtown High School! Advised by science teacher Chris Canfield, the group meets on Friday afternoons (usually in the Lecture Hall) to discuss technique, teach and share songs, and just have fun playing. At their most recent meeting, they watched a DVD of Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival, a performance teeming with six-string luminaries such as Jeff Beck, Johnny Winter, and Derek Trucks. The club is open to all who play guitar or bass, or would like to learn. Please see Audra or Mr. Canfield for more information. The XY Chromotones, a new male a cappella group at Newtown High School, had a special guest at their practice on Thursday, January 14, 2010. Ms. Friedman’s good friend Erik Lindquist from her a cappella group in college came to administer a beatboxing workshop. The Chromotones learned the three basic sounds as well as practical ways to join them together. It was a chorus of noise, and XY will be drum machines in no time!
We are excited to announce a new program at Newtown High School – NHS Teams for Kids which was inspired by and modeled after the Friends of Jaclyn organization. The mission of the NHS Teams for Kids program is to provide a supportive network for children with medical conditions. NHS Teams for Kids matches a child (Kindergarten – 6thgrade) with one of the Newtown High School sport teams. A supportive relationship is then formed between the child, the child’s family and the sports team. Read the rest of this entry »
