We understand that many of you are frustrated with the high volume of traffic on and around the Newtown High School campus during the morning hours.  During a recent week, we counted the number of vehicles entering campus prior to the start of school (6:45 a.m. – 7:25 a.m.).  On average, 750-800 vehicles (not counting school buses) drive onto campus each morning.  This amounts to one car approximately every 4.5 seconds.  The on-going school construction project has little, if any impact on the traffic volume, which unfortunately means that the high volume of traffic is not anticipated to diminish anytime soon.  Therefore, to expedite dropping off your child in the morning, we ask you to please keep the following in mind.

  1. Please allow yourself a few extra minutes from the time you leave your home to the time of your arrival in the student drop-off area in the main driveway (especially in foul weather).
  2. Please position your vehicle along the right curb and continue all the way up to the yellow “Student Drop-Off Begins Here” sign affixed in the median area in front of the school auditorium-crosswalk before stopping.
  3. Safety Note: Students should only exit your vehicle from the passenger side, (which positions them along the right side of the drop off lane) never into the travel lane.

  4. Please make every possible effort to ensure that your child has his/her belongs in hand, which will enable them to exit your vehicle quickly, and for you to be able to drive off.
  5. Please do not attempt to cut across the travel lanes.  Instead, please exit the lot by driving to the end of the drop off lane (past the auditorium) and following the driveway around to the exit.

The afternoon student pickup will continue to be in the lower driveway adjacent to the cafeteria patio.  Please know that the school buses begin staging in the NHS entrance driveway at approximately 1:30-1:40 pm.  Therefore, all vehicle access to the driveways (with the exception of vehicles in line to pickup students in the lower cafeteria parking lot) is shut down at 1:45 pm. This shutdown remains in effect until both waves of school buses exit campus, which generally is completed by 2:15 pm.

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.
